Fish Screening and Passage Program accepting applications for cost
sharing projects
SALEM - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's Fish Screening and
Passage Program today announced it is accepting applications for cost
sharing fish screening and passage projects.
Projects may be for the design and engineering, construction, and/or
installation of screens, bypass devices, fish ladders, or artificial
obstruction removal. The application period closes Nov. 1.
Fish screens prevent the loss of young fish as water is drawn for
irrigation, domestic, municipal, industrial, hydroelectric or other
purposes. Screens are an essential part of any system that diverts water
from a public water body.
Fish ladders are essential to allow fish to pass upstream of artificial
obstructions. Providing fish passage to restore access to historic
habitat is one of the best ways to improve fish populations.
The Fish Screening and Passage Program provides up to 60 percent of the
cost of approved fish screening or fish passage projects, up to $75,000
per project. After the application period closes, ODFW will review and
rank projects prior to granting funds to successful applicants.
For application information, call Bernie Kepshire, State Fish Screening
Coordinator, at 503-947-6229, or Tom Stahl, State Fish Passage
Coordinator, at 503-947-6228.
