Wings needed from Klamath and Lake county bird hunters
KLAMATH FALLS - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife officials today
reminded grouse and quail hunters in Klamath and Lake counties that
their help is needed by game managers this season.
Hunters are asked to provide one wing and the tail from each ruffed
grouse harvested, and one wing from each blue grouse and mountain quail
harvested, along with the date and location of the harvest.
"Information from wings is used by biologists to better understand the
distribution of bird populations," said Tom Collom, ODFW district
biologist. "Gender and age, which can be determined from the wings, help
us understand the timing of reproduction and see what the grouse and
quail populations are doing."
In Klamath County, hunters can obtain collection bags by calling ODFW's
Klamath District office at (541) 883-5732, or at one of the collection
barrel sites located at:
* Klamath District wildlife office, 1850 Miller Island Rd in Klamath
Falls;
* Keno Fire Hall, intersection of Highway 66 and Clover Creek Junction;
* Hagelstein Park located at the intersection of Highway 97 and Forest
Road 9718.
In Lake County, hunters can obtain collection bags or drop their wings
off at the Lakeview ODFW office, 100 N "D" Street in Lakeview.
Season dates for blue and ruffed grouse are Sept. 1 - Nov. 27, with a
bag limit of three each species per day. Mountain quail may be harvested
from Oct. 8 - Dec. 31, with a bag limit of two per day.
Collom said hunters looking for blue grouse should concentrate on
semi-open ridge tops. Ruffed grouse can be found along riparian areas
with deciduous trees and shrubs, and mountain quail can be found in
brushy areas in western Klamath County. Hunters should note that
mountain quail season is closed in Lake County.
