North Bend meeting to focus on local STEP projects
ROSEBURG - Local projects that benefit salmon fishing are the topic of a
Salmon Trout Enhancement Program meeting Jan. 18 in North Bend.
The meeting is scheduled for 6:30 - 8:30 p.m. at the North Bend Public
Library's meeting room, 1800 Sherman Ave.
Interested members of the public can learn more about local STEP fish
propagation projects and offer input to the Salmon-Trout Advisory
Committee review progress. STAC will meet later in the month to review
and evaluate local STEP projects. STAC then recommends approval or
amendment of these projects to the Fish Division Administrator.
STEP is an ODFW program that enlists citizen volunteers for projects to
help meet ODFW fish management objectives. Volunteers provide countless
hours of assistance to enhance fish populations through fish
propagation, habitat improvement, education and outreach. Fish produced
by STEP projects increase the number of fish available for harvest while
providing STEP volunteers with pride in local fishery resources.
In the Coos County area, five STEP fish rearing projects are producing
juvenile chinook salmon for release in the Coos and Coquille basins.
Another project rears rainbow trout for kids to catch on Free Fishing
Day at Eel Lake.
STEP meets the goals of the Oregon Plan for Salmon and Watersheds by
providing an avenue for outreach and education to the general public on
watershed and fishery resources, and by providing salmon and steelhead
fisheries while protecting native fish populations.
