Commission reschedules meeting to select ODFW Director
SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today convened a special
meeting to discuss appointment of a new ODFW Director, but agreed to
table the discussion until the Commission can arrange a formal,
face-to-face meeting.
The special meeting convened at 1 p.m. via teleconference, with all
Commissioners present except Carter Kearns. The meeting adjourned at
1:12 p.m. after a brief discussion of format. Commission Chair Marla Rae
acknowledged that rescheduling the meeting prolongs the process, but
said it will help ensure careful selection.
"This is a critical decision that will impact the future of fish and
wildlife management throughout Oregon," Rae said. "We are pleased to
have outstanding candidates for the Director's position, and we want to
give the process time to fully weigh this decision as individuals and as
a group. The Commissioners agreed this is not a decision we feel
comfortable making over a phone call."
The Commission interviewed three finalist candidates last Thursday at
its regular monthly meeting in Salem. Two finalists emerged from that
process -- ODFW Interim Director Roy Elicker and Virgil Moore, Idaho
Department of Fish and Game's Fisheries chief.
The time, date and location of the special meeting to finalize the
decision will be announced soon.
The Commission is the policy making body for fish and wildlife issues in
Oregon. The seven-member panel meets monthly.
