First meeting of ODFW hunting advisory group Saturday

SALEM - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced the first
meeting of the Hunter Recruitment Work Group, which will take place
March 11 at ODFW Headquarters in Salem.

The group is charged with reviewing recent trends in hunting
participation throughout the state and developing proposals to bolster
hunter recruitment and retention.

"Hunting and angling are cornerstones of Oregon's heritage," said ODFW
Interim Director Roy Elicker. "Hunters and anglers have provided the key
support for fish and wildlife management in North America for more than
100 years. They are essential to ensure healthy fish and wildlife
populations for the future.

"We hope to find ways to help introduce all interested Oregonians to
hunting by identifying barriers to participation and developing ideas
for reducing or eliminating those barriers."

The meeting is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. ODFW Headquarters is
located at 3406 Cherry Ave, NE in Salem. The public is welcome to
attend. The agenda includes an overview of hunting issues throughout
Oregon and in other states. The work group will be asked to develop
ideas and concepts to increase hunting participation. The best ideas
will be used to try and recruit more hunters.

Last year, 9 percent of Oregonians participated in some form of hunting.
A 2005 survey by Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies found
that 22 percent of Oregonians have some interest in hunting in the
future.

The group, which includes women, disabled hunters, the media and
representatives from hunting organizations, Native American tribes, the
outdoor retail industry, forest and agricultural landowners, minority
groups, and hunter education organizations, was assembled at Elicker's
request in January.
