Public meeting on hatchery production

LINCOLN CITY - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife today announced a
March 22 public meeting to provide information and take feedback on
proposed changes in hatchery production at Salmon River Hatchery near
Lincoln City.

The meeting will be held from 7- 9 p.m. at the Lincoln City Community
Center, 2150 NE Oar Place. Details of the proposal will be presented and
discussed at the meeting.

ODFW, in collaboration with National Oceanic and Atmospheric
Administration fisheries, the public, and other state agencies is
developing a coastal coho salmon conservation plan to address factors
limiting coho salmon production. As a part of this plan, a proposal is
being developed to end hatchery coho salmon production at Salmon River
Hatchery for release in Salmon River and instead use the space at Salmon
River Hatchery to raise coho salmon for release in Youngs Bay on the
lower Columbia River.

"This change is expected to maintain or increase overall fishery
benefits from hatchery coho salmon production and to allow recovery of
wild coho salmon in Salmon River," said District Fish Biologist Bob
Buckman.
