Commission votes to reopen commercial sardine issues

SALEM - The Oregon Fish and Wildlife Commission today voted unanimously
to accept two petitions filed by commercial sardine fishermen,
requesting the commission to engage in rulemaking for the fishery.

The Commission in December 2005 moved sardines from the developmental
fisheries list and adopted a limited entry system for the fishery. At
that time, the Commission adopted eligibility requirements for the
fishery that were developed through eight public meetings of the
industry and the state Developmental Fisheries Board.

The Administrative Procedures Act requires the Commission to deny
petitions or initiate rulemaking proceedings within 90 days of receipt
of a rulemaking petition.

The Commission directed ODFW staff to prepare potential rule changes to
address concerns expressed by the petitioners. The Commission expects to
act on the proposals at its August meeting.

The Commission is the policy making body for fish and wildlife issues in
the state. The seven-member panel meets monthly. The next regular
Commission meeting is May 11-12 in Burns. Agenda item exhibits may be
requested by calling the ODFW Director's Office at 800-720-6339 or
