Youth fishing event scheduled for McNary Ponds

PENDLETON - Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and the U.S. Army
Corps of Engineers today announced a youth fishing event May 13 at
McNary Ponds near Umatilla.

ODFW will stock 3,250 trout in two ponds for the event, including some
trophy size fish, as part of the Youth Angling Enhancement Program, now
in its third year.
The event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon with registration beginning at
8:30 a.m. Prizes will be awarded to the angler catching the biggest fish
in age groups six and under, 7 to 9 and 10 to 12 years. ODFW will
provide young anglers loaner rods and reels, bait and tackle, and park
rangers will be available to provide angler assistance.
"This event is specifically for the kids," said ODFW District Fish
Biologist Tim Bailey. "We want to encourage children as they learn to
fish, and hope they enjoy an activity that can provide lifelong
recreation."

Anglers 13 years of age and under can fish for free. A juvenile license
is required for anglers 14-17 years of age. All state fishing
regulations continue to apply.
The pond is adjacent to the Columbia River downstream of McNary Dam. For
more information contact Bailey at ODFW's Pendleton office at
541-276-2344.
