Spring chinook fishery opens on Snake River

LA GRANDE - State fishery managers today announced the Upper Snake River
will open May 20-June 19, Friday through Monday each week, for spring
chinook angling between Dug Bar and the deadline at Hells Canyon Dam.

Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife and Idaho Fish and Game approved
opening the season because of surplus spring chinook returning to Hells
Canyon Dam.

Preliminary projections for this year's Snake River run are 31,600
adipose fin-clipped adult spring chinook salmon and 14,600 unclipped
adults will migrate over Lower Granite Dam. Of those, 750 unlisted,
adipose fin-clipped adults are expected to return to the base of Hells
Canyon Dam.

"Half of the 750 fish are identified as surplus to program needs and
will be available to the sport fishery," said Scott Patterson, ODFW
Northeast Region Hatchery Coordinator. "We're pleased that these fish
will be available to provide additional sport fishing opportunities for
anglers."

The daily bag limit is 1 adipose fin-clipped spring chinook per day.
Only barbless hooks may be used. All anglers are reminded to consult the
2006 Oregon Sport Fishing Regulations for additional gear restrictions,
legal angling times and other applicable sport fishing regulations.
