Hello ODLC Community,
I wanted to take this opportunity to say hello to you all. As of 7/1, I went from being the co-chair of ODLC to the chair, following on the heels of our excellent outgoing chair, Kathryn Kohl. Between her and all of the previous chairs, I have big shoes to fill. I promise to do my best, but I'm sure I'll be needing all the help I can get.
I am currently an Area Manager for Jackson County Library Services, managing five of our smaller libraries in Applegate, Gold Hill, Jacksonville, Rogue River, and Ruch, Oregon. They are lovely towns, and lovely libraries, and you should visit them when you get the chance. When I first took on the role of co-chair, I was Collection Development Librarian for Josephine Community Library, headquartered in Grants Pass, so it's been a big transition year for me. It's also been a transition for JCLS, which went from being managed by LS&S, the private library management company, to being directly managed by our special district. I'm also president of the Southern Oregon Library Federation, a small professional networking organization. Outside of the library world, I'm an avid D&D player, a film blogger (www.centuryfilmproject.org<http://www.centuryfilmproject.org>), and a heavy reviewer for goodreads. I do seem to keep busy!
I wanted to update you on a few things as we move into our new fiscal year (2020/2021):
* OVERDRIVE INVOICES ARE AVAILABLE NOW: your 2020/2021 invoice is now available in OverDrive Marketplace.
* Essentially you'll need to login to your OverDrive Marketplace account and click on the link called "Invoicing."
* If you have any problems accessing your invoice, please let me know.
* ODLC IS APPLYING FOR AN IMLS CARES GRANT in the amount of $150,000 to add Spanish language materials to our collection! The recipients won't be announced until August, but a huge thank you to Rebecca Gabert, our Selection Chair, for leading the effort to pull together our grant application, and to the Public Library Division of OLA for sponsoring/assisting us with our application (and they will be our fiscal agent if we get the grant). This amount would allow us to establish and maintain a solid collection of Spanish language materials to better meet the needs of our diverse communities.
* OBOB FUNDS: we were again the fortunate recipients of funds the Oregon Association of School Libraries (which runs the Oregon Battle of the Books). This year they contributed $20,000 which is almost double what we usually receive, and we are very grateful to be able to offer these titles to our patrons.
* STATE LIBRARY STATISTICS: Kathryn Kohl, our 19/20 ODLC Chair, will be pulling all of our ODLC statistics to give to Ross Fuqua at the State Library, for pre-populating the annual statistical report for public libraries in Oregon.
* KKR ACQUISITION OF OVERDRIVE: OverDrive has recently been acquired by KKR, a global investment firm, which also owns RBDigital. We are still waiting for the specifics of what this will mean for those of you who have both OverDrive and RBDigital collections available to your patrons, but we have been told more information will be coming out soon.
* NEW EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE: starting this month you have a new ODLC Executive Committee. Here are the members (some new to the group, and some returning):
* CHAIR - Michael Grutchfield, Jackson County Library Services
* VICE-CHAIR - Elizabeth Sonstegaard, Albany Public Library
* SECRETARY - Carrie Schindele-Cupples, Springfield Public Library
* SELECTION COMMITTEE CHAIR - Rebecca Gabert, Salem Public Library
* MEMBER-AT-LARGE: Ryan McGinnis, Cook Memorial Library/Libraries of Eastern Oregon
* MEMBER-AT-LARGE: Fawn Dabrowiak, Libraries in Clackamas County
* SOME PLANS FOR THE COMING YEAR:
* Designing/developing a new budget for fiscal year 2021/2022 (possibly a two year budget)
* Proposing a bylaws change to allow new libraries to join ODLC at two times of the year (instead of the current option to join on July 1st).
Thank you all and have a good weekend,
Michael Grutchfield, MLIS
