Hello ODLC Community!

We are fast approaching the end of the fiscal year, and that means it’s time for various updates – and also time for all of you to get ready for the invoices from Overdrive. These should be coming your way soon after July 1, be sure to
watch out that they don’t disappear into a spam filter!

The first update I have for you is the results of our Governing Board elections – I can announce with happiness that two small libraries will be joining our community! These are Harrisburg Public Library and Yachats Public Library, both
of which will now become Associate Libraries under our Consortium. The new Executive Board is also confirmed: Elizabeth Sonstegaard will be taking on my role as chair, having been elected co-chair last year, and her new co-chair will be Carrie Schindele-Cupples.
Stephanie Chase has been elected as secretary and the two members-at-large are Ryan McGinnis (returning) and Geri Godber (first term). And the news you’ve all been waiting for – the Governing Board voted to raise our content budget by 8% over the next two
years, which will allow us to continue diversifying our collection at the present rate and hopefully also offset hold times.

Speaking of the Governing Board, I also have to let you know about a change. After many years of service, Jeremy Skinner of Curry Library let us know that he has to step down as the representative for the Associate Libraries. On behalf
of the Executive Committee and ODLC, thank you very much Jeremy for all you’ve done. The good news is that Kris Wiley of Roseburg Library has agreed to come aboard as the new Governing Board Representative. I thank her as well and hope you will all join me
in welcoming her to this body.

And, she’ll get a chance to participate in a vote early, because something got left off the Spring Board vote (due to my error – sorry!) For much of the past year, the Executive Committee has been discussing changing our previous policy
about Overdrive’s Public Library Connect program, somewhat better known by the Sora App that school libraries can sign up for. A few words from our Overdrive rep about this follow:

“PLC allows you to safely share your digital collection with local schools at no additional cost using the OverDrive education app, Sora. Through PLC, local school communities can use Sora to search for and borrow
age-appropriate digital materials from your library. Users are authenticated through Sora using their existing school logins, so there’s no setup required from you.

In the past, there was a sense that this might be unfair to school districts with less access to electronic resources/bandwidth or that it could put a new strain on our holds system, with an influx of new users coming from the schools.
After fifteen months of mostly-online learning, the first objection feels less compelling than the opportunity to help out schools with electronic resources where possible, and we are also aware that our children’s collection is one of the least-used parts
of the content we license, so it might be a good thing to get a boost there as well. With that in mind, the Executive Committee agreed to put this question to a vote of the Governing Board, and that will follow shortly.

Apologies for the long message, thank you all very much for what you do for ODLC and your communities.
