Good morning OGIC Members,
The Oregon Department of Emergency Management (OEM) has finalized a new Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Strategy designed to strengthen how we use data, mapping, and technology to support disaster preparedness, response, recovery, and mitigation across Oregon.
GIS plays a critical role in how OEM supports communities before, during, and after emergencies. From hazard mapping and situational awareness to supporting decision-makers and improving public information, GIS helps turn complex data into actionable insight.
This strategy will help OEM:
* Align efforts with our mission to support Oregon's communities
* Improve how we organize and prioritize GIS work across the agency
* Strengthen our ability to meet the needs of partners and the public
* Support programs with better tools to visualize risk and impacts
* Build a stronger foundation for data-driven decision making
Ultimately, GIS is one of the many tools that helps OEM deliver on our commitment to service, collaboration, communications, integrity, and leadership.
The strategy identifies nine priority areas that will guide GIS development and investment:
1. Enhancing data integration, standardization, and security
2. Illustrating data equity and accessibility
3. Strengthening hazard mapping and risk assessment
4. Improving situational awareness and decision support
5. Facilitating interagency collaboration
6. Empowering community partners' engagement and resilience
7. Investing in technology and capacity building
8. Supporting 9-1-1 call mapping in PSAPs
9. Developing statewide GIS for a modernized Next Generation 9-1-1 system
