<i>George</i> kerfuffle started, it became clear that some school and district administrators could use some guidance about intellectual freedom, challenged materials, and related concepts. I reached out to some staff at the Oregon Department of Education (ODE)
 to ask if they would be willing to provide that guidance. The answer was yes, but for a variety of reasons, it took until now to finalize a document.

 to School Districts: Addressing Challenged Materials in K-12 Education</span></a>” was sent to school and district administrators on Tuesday, May 7th. It was part of an email that also discussed 2019 commencement
</span><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2E75B6">ceremonies, so I hope that recipients did not overlook the part about challenged materials.

<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2E75B6"><o:p> </o:p></span></p>
<p class="MsoNormal"><span style="font-size:12.0pt;color:#2E75B6">A few school librarians and I were able to offer input on the document. In the end, leadership at ODE had the final say. One change they asked for was to include links to several Oregon School
 Board Association (OSBA) policy templates. It is my personal opinion that some of the OSBA templates are vague. For example, one OSBA policy that I read does not make it clear how to address challenges to library materials. However, the policy examples are
 starting points, and you can point folks to more specific policies like the <a href="https://www.beaverton.k12.or.us/dist/Admin%20Regs%20and%20Policies/I%20Policies/Regulations/IIIIA%20AR.pdf">
<span style="color:#2E75B6">one that Beaverton School District updated recently</span></a>.  <o:p></o:p></span></p>
