Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] OMS Updates
1. Main Street Gains More Notice: Follow-up from the National
Preservation Conference hosted by the National Trust for Historic
Preservation in Austin, Texas. New Yorker architecture critic Paul
Goldberger spoke at the opening Plenary Session, saying, "The Main
Street Program of the Trust, which helps to strengthen the cores of
small towns that have been so decimated by the massive engine of sprawl
is a key example of the Trust's wide ranging influence here and of its
on-going commitment. I think the Main Street program has probably done
as much if not more than most National Trust historic sites to improve
the quality of life in this country...if you live in a community in
which a Main Street has been brought back to health, preservation has
made your life better every day."
2. More good news from Main Street: I was recently elected to serve on
the National Main Street Coordinators Executive Committee. The purpose
of the Executive Committee is to provide timely communication and input
to support the partnership between the Main Street Coordinating Programs
and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, to further the goals
of the Main Street movement, and to provide insight into traditional
commercial district issues and opportunities as the National Trust staff
develop and implement programs. I am honored to represent Oregon and the
rest of the western region of the National Trust in this position.
3. National Trust Preservation Fund Grants. The deadline for the first
round of the National Trust Preservation Fund grants is February 1.
These grants are intended to encourage preservation at the local level
by providing seed money for preservation projects. Eligible projects
include planning activities (e.g., hiring a preservation architect to
produce a historic structure report) or preservation education efforts
aimed at the public (e.g., sponsoring a preservation workshop). Grants
generally range from $500 to $5,000. For application information, see
www.preservationnation.org and click on the "Resources" tab.
4. Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards. Take time to nominate an
outstanding individual, business or organization for an Oregon Heritage
Excellence Award. Oregon Heritage Excellence Awards recognize
individuals, businesses and organizations for outstanding efforts on
behalf of Oregon heritage, draw public attention to these efforts, and
raise the quality of heritage-oriented activities. This year's awards
will be presented April 8 at the Oregon Heritage Conference in Astoria.
The Heritage Programs of the Oregon Parks and Recreation Department,
which houses the Oregon Heritage Commission and the Oregon State
Historic Preservation Office, will present the awards. See
http://www.oregon.gov/OPRD/HCD/OHC/award_info.shtml for details.
5. Receiving OMS listserve in digest format. Several folks have asked if
the Oregon Main Street list serve can be received in digest format
(i.e., a summary once per day rather than "real time."). Please email
me off-list serve (when you hit reply, check the "reply privately" box &
then check "reply to sender" box) to let me know if you want to make
this change.
