Just wanted to share the good news...three new communities have been
accepted at the "Transforming Downtown" level of the Oregon Main Street
network: Coos Bay, Port Orford, and Sherwood. While not a requirement to
be accepted at the Transforming Downtown level, all three communities
were participating at the Exploring Downtown level.
There is a competitive application process open once per year to apply
for the Transforming Downtown level. Communities must demonstrate they
have a high level of commitment to implementing a comprehensive downtown
revitalization program using the Main Street Approach and must have a
cohesive core of historic or older commercial and mixed-use buildings
that represent the community’s architectural heritage and may include
compatible in-fill. They must also have a sufficient mass of businesses,
buildings, and density to be effective, as well as be compact and
pedestrian-oriented.
