The Institute for Self Reliance has conducted a lot of research on the benefits of locally owned businesses. In the process, they have gathered a lot of information on the negative impacts of big box. They have a lot of information on-line, including a "Big Box Toolkit" - this might have info that will be of help to you:

Hello,
At some point I recall hearing someone within our network mention I believe it was a city ordinance that could be established to ward off Walmart. If any of you recall what that is or where we could find it please let me know. The citizens of Sherwood found out last week that Walmart is planning on closing a deal here in Sherwood next month.
We have many, many people working to fight this before it's too late and would love whatever strategies any of you may know of to help us do so.
Thank you,
Angi Ford
