Part I: Rightsizing Big Data: Finding Numbers that Sell your Downtown: Many businesses collecting ‘big data’ can create internal silos and are unwilling to share their information. This is a game changer for planners, economic developers, and downtown directors seeking to understand and build attractive markets for stores, restaurants, employment, and homes. This session provides a framework for the practical application of available ‘big data’ resources for local practitioners regardless of their downtown development role. Learn strategies to find key new data and how to use that information in a way that differentiates and promotes your community.
Part II: The Future of Retail Sales: From the advent of online shopping and show rooming to shifting American consumerism, retail trade in our communities is fundamentally changing in ways we’re just now beginning to understand. What does this mean in terms of retail development for your downtown and throughout your community? Does community size really matter? And how do we deal with struggling retail development in the context of these major industry shifts?
Speaker Bio: Diane Williams joined Business Districts, Inc. (BDI) in 2003 with a unique combination of public and private sector experiences and skills. Diane’s careers in both sectors encompass three decades of experience in understanding markets and their relationships to strategy development, and over the last fifteen years, their significance in commercial district revitalization and historic preservation economics. Prior to completing graduate studies in historic preservation, Diane Williams was a Vice President at Citibank in Chicago. She has twenty-one years of banking experience, including thirteen as a commercial banker to the small business market. In her Main Street work, Diane has served as the Deputy State Coordinator in Illinois, is a graduate of the National Trust Main Street Center’s Certification Institute, and has worked with local and state Main Street programs throughout the U.S.
