Most of the main street programs in Oregon are 501c3. A few that started in the 1980's were 501c6, and a couple were 501c4. Some of the rationale for the 501c3 basis are: lessening the burden of government, education, historic preservation, removing slum & blight, etc.

Hi,

I know this is not part of your original question, but I was wondering if you are a 501c3 and not a 501c4 or c6.  I did not think that a Main Street group was considered charitable.  We are starting to formulate our organization and was wondering about this.

Hello Everyone,   I am interested in learning how other communities handle the following situation.   We are now a 501(c) 3.  We are considering offering a Facade Improvement Loan.  One of the key properties on the entrance to our Main Street that is in great disrepair is owned by a board member.  They would like to apply for a loan.
Any suggestions or thoughts??
