Downtown Celebrates a Prosperous 2016... and More Successes to Come!

2016 was a prosperous year for Downtown Hillsboro. The district had a total
of *13 new businesses, and 8 expansions.* New retail businesses that have
opened their doors this year include Perks of Art and Rune & Board Game
Store, along with two new art galleries, Catherine Bede Gallery and Sophia
Palmer Gallery. New restaurants and eateries that opened are Aybla
Mediterranean Grill and Sweet Promises Bakery. And we have seen a broad mix
of service businesses join the Downtown district, including Sea Wave
Massage Therapy, Infinite Moments Photography, Leather Pros Inc, Proffer
Real Estate, L Technology Group and iTek Mobile. Mi Rancho Club, a cultural
event center also opened its doors for business.

Businesses that have undergone physical and/or staff expansions include
Universal Love Healing Center, Clark's Bistro & Pub, Manaia Café, McNally's
Taproom, Denise's Spa Petite, Breaking Ink Tattoo Parlor, Starbucks Coffee
and Amelia's Mexican Restaurant. With all the new and expanded businesses, *we
welcomed 47 new employees* to Downtown Hillsboro in 2016.

Not only were people investing in businesses, but there has been a
slew of *storefront
and building improvements* in the district as well. Completed improvements
add up to a total *investment of approximately $298,000* in Downtown
building stock. The City of Hillsboro also made a large investment in the
future growth of Downtown by placing an offer to *purchase the Hank's
Thriftway* building. This building, taking up an entire city block, will
play a major role in the connection of Downtown to the adjacent Health &
Education district that houses PCC, Pacific University, and Tuality
Healthcare Center.

We have also seen new happenings in the *events and entertainment* aspects
of Downtown. In 2016, the Hillsboro Downtown Partnership (HDP) established
four Downtown focused committees working on *exciting and innovative
revitalization projects* in various focal areas: Promotions, Design,
Business Development, and Organization. HDP hosted the *Inaugural Farm to
Table Dinner*, serving 250 people in the middle of Main Street, featuring 5
Downtown restaurants and chefs, local farms, vineyards, cideries and
breweries. The Safe N Sane Trick or Treat event was retooled into a street
festival titled *Harvest on Main*, and we have seen an increase in business
and community participation in *Hillsboro's First Tuesday Art Walk.*

And we have much *more to look forward to in 2017*, starting with *three
new businesses* opening early in the year. Insomnia Coffee Company is
opening their 6th and largest location right on Main Street, complete with
a 4 and 20-person conference room, baked goods, and Dapper & Wise roasting
facility. Decadent Creations Bakery plans to open in Spring, and the build
out includes a commissary kitchen, classroom space, and green space
complete with outdoor seating. Lastly, the Study of Sweets plans to open in
mid-February and features handmade confections, chocolates, candies and an
extensive hot chocolate list. They will even have a make-your-own chocolate
bar station!

Many *Downtown beautification projects* are also kicking off in 2017. *Colorful
Downtown banners*, pedestrian directional signs and parking signs will be
installed in January. Also coming to the district is the *newest piece of
public art,* titled the Walking Warrior by Sharon Agnor. This piece will be
installed on the corner of 4th and Main, and will have an artist and
community celebration in conjunction with February's First Tuesday Art
Walk, taking place on February 2nd. In Spring, the City is
implementing *Hillsboro's
first intersection painting* at the entry way of Downtown, in the
intersection of 5th and Main. The artwork will take up the entirety of the
intersection, creating awareness of Downtown and welcoming people as they
arrive. We are also excited to see the results of the *storefront
improvements* taking place at Let's Play Toy Store, Insomnia Coffee
Company, Allied Chiropractic, Christian Science Reading Room, and Decadent
Creations.

As HDP looks forward to all the successes coming to Downtown in 2017, we
