Interesting new report from Smart Growth America. It discusses why the old economic development tools are no longer sufficient: tax breaks and subsidies alone do not create great places. Smart growth strategies like zoning changes, incentives for infill development, policies to make a range of housing available, street improvements, investments in transit, support for public parks and gathering spaces, and creative reuse of historic buildings are among the new, innovative ways cities are creating places where people and companies want to be.

Rather than offering tax breaks to lure companies, these cities are creating walkable, vibrant, inclusive neighborhoods that are attracting residents and employers, supporting existing businesses, and fostering entrepreneurs.
We talk about this new approach in our most recent report, Amazing Place: Six Cities Using the New Recipe for Economic Development<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=YJpp8forYJKeAViJegP3KsWCVfBRCNt7>, which came out on Tuesday. The report takes an in-depth look at the development strategies at work in these six cities, and shows how communities anywhere can create diverse and durable local economies.
As part of Tuesday’s kickoff we hosted an online conversation about creating these amazing places. The report's authors gave an overview of this new approach, and representatives from Denver, Greenville, and Pittsburgh discussed the specific ways their cities are creating amazing places.
If you weren't able to join Tuesday's discussion, a recording of the webinar is now available<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=zbWhYZCrJ4iXndQEPFgRzsWCVfBRCNt7>. Watch the recording to learn more about the new report and get ideas for how your city can use this new approach to economic development.
The webinar concluded with a question and answer session with participants. We received many more questions than we were able to answer during the event, but more information about our six cities and the strategies they're using is available in the full report<http://action.smartgrowthamerica.org/salsa/track.jsp?v=2&c=w5zFKuTTjgEHRFy59pghlcWCVfBRCNt7>.
Sincerely,
Smart Growth America
