Nominations Open for 2016 DeMuro Awards

Honoring Exceptional Historic Preservation, Reuse, and Community Revitalization



Was there a restoration project in your community that turned the proverbial "sow's ear into a silk purse?"  Nominations are now being accepted by Restore Oregon for the 2016 DeMuro Awards.  Named after developer and preservationist, Art DeMuro, the award honors outstanding examples of preservation and adaptive reuse of historic homes and buildings, and compatible new development in historic districts.



Awards will be presented in several categories for preservation projects completed within the last five years.  Judges look for exceptional design, creative problem-solving, quality craftsmanship, and community impact.  The nomination form can be downloaded at RestoreOregon.org/demuro-award<http://restoreoregon.org/demuro-award/> and submissions are DUE BY AUGUST 5, 2016.



Former winning projects have come from across Oregon, including the old Astoria Train Depot, Furman Hall at Oregon State University, a former Rangers Station cabin in Sisters, the conversion of a notorious Portland saloon into affordable housing, and a former car dealership into retail/office space in Medford.



"The purpose of the DeMuro Awards is to celebrate those who steward Oregon's historic places with particular excellence, persistence, and impact," says Restore Oregon Executive Director, Peggy Moretti.  "These are examples of what is possible and we hope they will inform and inspire others across the state."


The awards will be presented at Restore Oregon's annual Restoration Celebration on November 11th in Portland.  This year's keynote speaker will be Emilie Evans, Co-founder at Brick + Beam Detroit<https://www.brickandbeamdetroit.com/>; and Director, Rightsizing Cities Initiative with PlaceEconomics<http://www.placeeconomics.com/about-us/who-we-are>.
