Conferences
1. The Oregon Heritage Conference takes place May 4-7 this year in the state's Capitol Building. The conference theme is "16 Going on 20, 50, 100: Reflecting on the Past, Capitolizing on the Present and Building the Future." The theme highlights several major heritage anniversaries, including the 20th anniversary of the first meeting of the Oregon Heritage Commission and the 50th anniversary of the National Historic Preservation Act. The conference will bring together hundreds of people who love and work with Oregon's heritage. Designed to be interdisciplinary, the conference focuses on all sectors of heritage, such as historic preservation, museums, archives, libraries, and local and state government. By bringing everyone together in one place, we can begin to realize that our work in heritage is all interconnected, that we have similar problems, and, together, can create better solutions. The Heritage Conference also includes workshops, tours, and breakout sessions that are equal parts innovation and practical advice. You can register for these special activities online, too. Preliminary descriptions of each session are now available at the conference's website<http://www.oregon.gov/oprd/HCD/OHC/Pages/Conference.aspx>. Share your photos of Oregon's heritage on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter using #oregonheritage.
2. Brownfields Conference Registration for the Oregon Brownfields Conference, May 16-17, is now open. Information on the conference can be found at: http://www.oregon4biz.com/Brownfields-Conference-2016/ There are scholarships available to assist with offsetting the cost of registration and/or hotel. The scholarship application is available online through the Conference webpage. Also, this year there is a separate Pre-Conference Brownfields 101 Workshop on Sunday, May 15th for those who are new to brownfields redevelopment or who would like a refresher on the basics.
3. 2016 National Main Streets Conference, May 23-25, Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The conference will bring together doers, makers and innovators to address challenges facing 21st century downtowns and commercial districts, while building on collective insights into opportunities on the horizon. Sessions will focus on creating places that are economically competitive and socially connected, as well as developing leaders that can direct these efforts and pave the way for communities of the future. Join the National Main Street Center in May to learn about topics ranging from creating measurable economic impact, to placemaking, the arts, and everything in between. 7. Hope VI Grant Opportunity: HUD's posted a NOFA for the HOPE VI Main Street Revitalization Program at grants.gov<http://grants.gov> at http://www.grants.gov/search-grants.html?agencies%3DHUD%7CDepartment%20of%20Housing%20and%20Urban%20Development The application deadline is April 12th and only one grant - of up to $500,000 - will be awarded this year. It was a grant program created by HUD at the urging of Senator Grassley of Iowa and is targeted to rural communities with very small public housing authorities and an active Main Street (or its equivalent) program. The basic theory is that the housing authority uses the grant to produce some affordable housing units along the Main Street commercial corridor (usually on the second or third story of a retail establishment).
