The Ford Family Foundation has selected the Greater Bandon Organization as a Catalytic Community Building Organization and has invited executive director Harv Schubothe to participate as a member in a learning exchange with leaders of a half dozen other Catalytic Community Building Organizations that the Ford Family Foundation has identified across the state. The Greater Bandon Association will receive financial support as a result.

The Foundation has defined Catalytic Community Building Organizations as key organizations in carrying out its Community Building Approach. “These organizations are attracting people; generating energy and hope; moving action forward; and helping to bring positive, lasting change to their communities. Along the way they are living into, modeling and creating a community building mindset and culture. They are responsive to the community in their work, and seek opportunities to collaborate and broaden leadership. They are humble visionaries who often go beyond traditional models, like the library that adopts a comprehensive and inclusive lens for its work. They act with moral courage and a will to serve the greater good”.

The purpose of the learning exchange to discover, distill, and then document key factors that enable them to do their community building work. This may have to do with leadership, values, communication, culture, structures and systems, and/or other key aspects of their work. What they identify and document will be shared with other organizations in Oregon and northern California to support them in their community building efforts. This work will be done in partnership with the Nonprofit Association of Oregon.

Schubothe indicated that this has come at an exciting time for his organization. “We are in the process of becoming a Performing Main Street program. At the same time, national Main Street is refreshing its 4-point Main Street approach with community transformation strategies becoming the focus of a Main Street program’s work. I hope to learn and gain insights from the organizations that the Ford Family Foundation has identified that can help further invigorate Bandon’s own community development work.”
