Darin,

Stayton (pop 8,000, 15 miles from Salem) has one pot shop located in the downtown area. It is among the busier of the downtown retail locations in the downtown. The police department reports no issues. It attracts a wide variety of customers. It’s questionable as to whether they generate traffic for other downtown retailers, however. On the other hand we don’t have a lot of retail downtown to generate traffic to…

We are expecting a second pot shop to located outside of downtown. We’ll see how it impacts the first store’s traffic.

The City collects a local sales tax on pot, in addition to our share of the state revenue.

The City enacted a local licensing code for all pot businesses. We have no producers or processers, just the one retail operation.

Subject: [OMS_MANAGERS] Marijuana Legalization

Good morning, all!

Here’s a fun question for you first thing Monday morning!

Klamath Falls (city) currently prohibits the sale/production of marijuana. A group has done the work to qualify a local measure for November’s ballot to legalize it.

Obviously, our board is deliberating what position, if any, we will take on this issue, and how we’ll approach the politics leading up to the election.

Do you have any thoughts, comments, stories, etc. related to how legalized sales have impacted downtown?

Good? Bad? Indifferent? Is the revenue generation worth any perceived negatives?

Thanks!
Darin
