[OMS_MANAGERS] Up lighting street trees

What a cool project! I like the idea of being able to change colors for the seasons. 

 

Someone already mentioned it, but yes, uplighting may be a concern. Even if it is allowed by local code, you may have local residents who will make a fuss if they aren’t involved in a process that creates what is perceived by many as light pollution. 

 

Also, something we learned from experience … our City last year installed electric outlets on every light post on Main Street to facilitate lighted decorations around the holidays. We were very excited because before the project was completed, we were led by the City to believe that we’d also be able to use this access to power for our summer events, etc., rather than setting up generators or running extension cords from nearby businesses. Unfortunately, the circuit that was installed was very light duty, and we do not have access to that power for anything other than the LED holiday decorations. Long story short, if you haven’t already, make sure you involve whichever authority is responsible for maintaining/paying for the power that you’ll be accessing. If you’re using an LED system it’s probably not a concern, but it may save you a headache down the road.

Hi All,

 

Downtown Tigard has secured funding to up light street trees on Main Street- The concept is to get away from Twinkle lights that require installation and de installation annually and in some community invites vandalism. 

 

Our thought is an LED programmable light (2 per tree) that we can change colors throughout seasons or use generic white- we have plugs at each tree.

 

Have other communities ventured this direction?

 

Thought, comments, product sourcing, successes are appreciated as we begin this exploration.
