1. Update on NMSC's Advocacy Efforts to Include Funding for State and Local Main Street Programs in the Next CARES Package:
I listened in on a call this morning hosted by the National Main Street Center for state coordinating programs to get an update on their advocacy efforts. Here's what I heard has happened or what they are working on:
* Patrice Frey, CEO, NMSC, shared that she is heartened and impressed by the effective run so far which, at a minimum, had presented a strong, initial case for main street - what it is, why it is important, and why support is needed now.
* Shaw w/the National Trust, shared that the HEALS and HEROES Acts don't include funding for EDA which is the conduit of funding for the NMSC request. This is very unusual that there isn't funding for EDA. He is not sure if the next CARES will pass before they break at the end of this week. Two things come in to play: it is the worst GDP ever and what the July unemployment numbers will look like (if good, most likely the effort will be pushed to September, if not good them maybe something sooner).
* NMSC has had a meeting w/Senate Appropriation staff which they said is a really high level reach to get main street in front of staff who may not know this kind of a program exists.
* International Economic Development Council (IEDC) and National Association of Development Organizations (NADO) sent a joint letter to support funding for the Economic Development Administration (EDA), including the funding package NMSC is requesting.
* NMSC is now encouraging advocacy efforts including:
a. Broad local engagement from staff, board members, and supporters of local main street programs to use the on-line form to send letters to Congress.
b. Encouraging local programs to identify people (such as mayors or board members) who have personal connections w/congressional members who will pick up the phone and call...and then report back to NMSC what they have heard.
* Attached are two info pieces that Kelly (w/National Main Street) shared in the chat.
* If you want to learn more, Kendall Bell w/the City of Klamath Falls and the Klamath Falls Downtown Association is serving on NMSC's Advocacy Task Force. Her email address is kendallbell945 at gmail.com<mailto:kendallbell945 at gmail.com>

The findings are quite compelling and underscore not only the importance of the nonprofit sector at this time, but also the pain these organizations are feeling and the hope and concerns they have for the future.
