[OMS_MANAGERS] Notes from Today

I too missed the call and probably will continue to in the future due to time conflicts. I do appreciate the notes, although I did not encounter much there that we haven’t talked about or done here in Bandon. It does reinforce, however, that we are all in this together and gain strength knowing others are fighting similar battles using some of the same successful strategies.

What I did not see in the notes are some actions we have taken internally that, honestly, I picked up from others so nothing necessarily original here. Two weeks ago, the Ford Family Foundation shut down their offices saying they were doing so to protect their staff. Seemed logical, so two weeks ago we did the same at GBA, shut down our office and called off our Board and Committee meetings for the month of March. Further, Ford’s administrators and staff were encouraged to do as much work as possible from home, led by their directors. Again, we did the same. I noticed in the last couple of days, our City of Bandon and now our Port of Bandon have taken similar actions.

That did not stop Ford’s work. They moved immediately to Zoom and continued their normal meetings. We here have done the same as we will return to our Board and Committee meetings in April using Zoom. Meetings up to 40 people are free there or you can get a business account for $14.99 a month. If you have Google Suite, you can use Hangout at no additional cost. So all of our future meetings are virtual until this passes.

As a Port of Bandon Commissioner, I am now receiving weekly updates via e-mail from our Port manager. If he can do it, so should I. I am now doing the same thing with my Board of Directors, in lieu of our monthly meeting they are getting Friday updates.

I also have reduced my pay to half-time. I did so understanding our Earth Day event was canceled, that I would not be spending ten hours on the road traveling to the Oregon Heritage Conference, four hours traveling to the Ford Family Foundation, not driving to and participating in some regular meetings with partners and networks. It also was recognition that my salary was in part supported by events and that perhaps our wine walk in June with proceeds equivalent to about half a month’s salary was going to be cancelled. Why not take that hit now as opposed to having to make up for lost revenue from cancelled events later when all of the activities just mentioned are back full force.

One might argue that the current crisis precludes us from working half time. I will say that I am doing a much better job identifying priorities and using my time more effectively. But it does not necessarily mean that I am cutting my work time in half. I am just reducing my pay. Isn’t that exactly what is happening with our merchants? Whether their doors are open or not, they are still there for all the hours that they were before, they just have far less income coming in. Those that I have talked to respect GBA’s decision wondering why our Chamber is not doing the same given that it is the merchant’s membership dollars that are paying for their salaries.

Keep the emails coming on the listserve. We gain strength from each other, especially each other’s ideas.

Harv

Dear Kevin,
Thank you very much for all your time and hard work.
These are challenging times for all of us, but there is a certain calmness that comes when working together to try and help each other 💕
Our moto for a gift shop we own is...
Keeping it Open⏰
Keeping it Clean 🧼

But we need to figure out how to help the bars and restaurants!!

Karen, that’s okay. Do what you need to do. We are in it together! Another ED told me today that our jobs are often like therapists these days. I agree.

Apologies for not being in attendance this morning...Port Orford is juggling its own solutions/problems at the moment. Our restaurants are shut down per the Governor's orders, serving only take-out. Our library was shut but is now on very limited hours. Our Co-op has also issued "how to shop" instructions. Dollar General is open, with the first hour of each day being limited to Senior shoppers. City Hall is closed as are all city owned facilities and restrooms...for a very small town of only 1100 people, times will become much harder I fear.

Main Street has cancelled their monthly Board meeting and regular meeting until further notice. Friday, Karen Auborn and I will be doing conference calls with Business Oregon and 2 business owners in Port Orford.

We WILL weather this storm and hopefully come out much stronger on the other side.

Regards,

Karen Cooley Jennings, President

Port Orford Main Street Revitalization Association
