[OMS_MANAGERS] Artistic Planters on Main Street

Double-second to the comments below... maintenance is primary.

Canby is blessed with some fantastic public landscaping downtown, but it is a tremendous amount of work for our Parks department. We plant into concrete "rounds" that are rimmed with brick, but raw concrete below. It is a tempting community project to paint or mosaic the concrete, but for us the Parks Dept maintenance concerns won the argument to leave the concrete blank... maybe someday we could do something artistic with stainless steel that would be maintenance friendly. I have also worked with our Garden Club to plant flowers in some of the new tree wells, but ultimately it was our Parks Dept who removed all of the dead brush in autumn (something I hadn't necessarily thought about in April).

I was able to have the City commit to sending a summer-seasonal employee out to water trees planted along Hwy 99E by a Beautification community group. This got the saplings through their first summer, and was a great activity for summer-seasonal employees who may actually NEED occasional busywork (about 4 hours/week for a college student with a municipal water truck in our case). "Just ask!"

We also use the 'wicking' planters in our plaza, which are very attractive and store water in their base for infrequent watering.

I love Kevin's approach in Beaverton - if the businesses are able to participate from the outset, I expect it will be a successful project.

Sincerely,

STRONGLY second Megan's comments. Plan for more maintenance that you thought possible (cars will hit them) and figure out your watering source (landscaping companies we've asked quote $50-$80 an hour)

Rebecca,

When I was the ED for Hillsdale Main Street, our Design Committee obtained a grant from the city to both help install planting strips along Capitol Hwy, and (separate project) purchase a series of large bright red planters and one large saucer planter for a random island we had at an intersection. (See photos below.) When we first installed them they looked amazing and were regularly commented on. We had a highway running through our downtown, so the size was fun and appropriate. The biggest failure we made, however, was not making a long-term maintenance plan BEFORE approving the planters. Now, several years later, they are a complete hodgepodge. Essentially one side of the street had property owners who took it upon themselves to maintain the ones in front of their properties, and the other side did not and they are now either empty or filled with weeds, dirty and are now an eyesore.

After hearing similar stories from other downtowns, I think that finding funding and man power for initial install is the easy part. Finding the ongoing maintenance agreements is the challenge, and it has to be one before anything else occurs. Good luck!

We just did planters in Beaverton, and we are going to be painting them, probably with some glow-in-the-dark paint.

They are about 3' long by 2' wide by 2' deep. They are made out of wood from a downtown business's pallets. They have some metal wiring on the inside to try to prevent rats from burrowing up and in. They have wheels on the bottom so that they move easily.

Building the planters ourselves saved hundreds of dollars and increased business involvement in this project a ton.

They are now a blank canvas for any style of paint that we could want. After they have served their purpose on 1st Street, we can even sell them off to downtown businesses who want planters in front of their storefronts.

Madras doesn't have a theme for our flower pots rather we purchase the same style for all of the flower pots from Tera Casa<https://urldefense.proofpoint.com/v2/url?u=http-3A__terracasa.com_&d=DwMF-g&c=pslXprxdtWHFBuj41-AaSLF1gHAT1_cek1PvLND777Q&r=bqwTYpq4wTXEUw1a0gdjyJc_fwmQwyha2a5MtMXrXlM&m=NqKXjX8YS8VmCPWTlIURsA97iPLOQRAZZGyBac4znfc&s=Zs6mRB4zd55Kv3TzFmfd_xatAPmVGdM_inDv1VlL-AQ&e=> in Damascus. The owner Diana Helm is great! We've bot pots from them for almost 10 years and continues to keep stock of "our pots" with modest price increases.

Our City has a newly formed Citizen Advisory Group - the Arts and Culture Commission. They are about to partner with our Main Street organization for their first project, decorative planters along our Main Street. They want to be able to have different groups/artists create the different planters with a common theme. West Linn is a Bee City and that will most likely be the theme. I was wondering if any of our Oregon communities have already done a project like this and if you would share the information about your project and pictures. We are looking for ideas and feedback on different types/styles of planters that work better than others.

Thank you in advance for your input!!
