[OMS_MANAGERS] Community Christmas Trees

We have three community trees downtown. One is a very old fir tree that stands live in Veterans Memorial Park. Another is a slightly younger fir tree that stands at City Hall. The third is about a 30’ “fake” tree installed at Klamath Commons Park. It’s kind of the best of both worlds, if you will.
I know, I’m not a huge fan of fake trees either, but it is an option and there are some advantages:
People are mostly looking at the lights anyway
One-time expense
Our City bought a scalable tree so that they can add a 5’ section to it every year
Way easier to anchor to the ground than a live cut tree. 😊
Good luck!

We looked at this and decided against it. Graveyard of the Pacific and all….
What we THOUGHT might be feasible would be:
Hole in the ground, as mentioned, with guy-lines of braided stainless steel attached to the ground attaching to the tree at about mid-height.
As to someone else’s note on fundraising – we only considered this because we had a tree donor.
At this time we use a fake metal tree that doesn’t need to be watered with significantly different physics than a live tree. This would be our recommendation for cost and safety reasons, although they are very expensive to acquire. We found a nearby municipality looking to toss theirs because of minor damage. We did a fairly easy repair and got a tree for free.

Wind is the enemy of the community tree and we have tried a variety of systems that have not worked well. This year we installed a pipe that is 10 inches wide and a couple feet deep in the ground. We hope it will keep the very large tree in place. Good luck.

Lindsey,
Bandon used to do this and we anchored it in a large and deep hole at our visitor center. After going through the hassle of finding and cutting down and hauling in large trees year after year, GBA started a campaign to raise money to purchase a live tree.
We agreed to put up $800 if twelve investors from the community put up $200 apiece, that is tripled our commitment. With that we found a tree farm in Gresham that delivered the tree to us in Bandon.
It was a major win for us and the community as a significant minority had questioned the waste of cutting down very mature trees for what mounted to a four week celebration.
This will be our third year with a live tree.

Good afternoon everyone,
Our local fairgrounds is hoping to install a large community tree this year. The only problem is that they don't have one planted, they are cutting it down and bringing it in. Do any of your towns do this, and if so, how do they secure it at the base?'
Thank you,
