What is RARE?

Serving rural Oregon for over 27 years, the University of Oregon's Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps Program<https://uoregon.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59e9acbbd52c506f74b13d2c4&id=8c26ee5c87&e=a2bda579e6> helps build the capacity of rural communities to improve their economic, social, and environmental conditions, through the assistance of trained graduate-level members who live and work in communities for 11 months. Our members assist communities and agencies in the development and implementation of plans for achieving a sustainable natural resource base and improving rural economic conditions while gaining community building and leadership skills.

RARE Projects

RARE AmeriCorps projects typically fall into three broad categories. Below are examples of past projects:

Community and Economic Development

  *   Coordinating the development of a downtown master plan or parks and recreation master plan
  *   Creating regional economic recovery and resilience plans
  *   Engaging a community in creative placemaking and installing murals
Environmental and Sustainability Planning

  *   Coordinating an array of land conservation and enhancement projects
  *   Designing a citizen involvement program for a watershed council
  *   Creating a rural solar outreach strategy
Food Systems

  *   Facilitating and developing community food assessments and tribal food sovereignty assessments
  *   Enhancing local farmers’ markets and food related business activities
  *   Developing regional agritourism food trails

Emme Shoup, Year 27
City of Sisters
As the Assistant Community Engagement & Program Coordinator, Emme is the conduit between the community and the City of Sisters throughout the planning process of the 2040 Comprehensive Plan Update, the implementation of the 2018 Sisters Country Vision, and cultivating Sisters’ first Tourism Strategic Plan.

Josias Escobedo, Years 26 & 27
Travel Southern Oregon
Josias supports existing and new destination development projects and opportunities related to culinary tourism, agritourism, and outdoor recreation in Southern Oregon. He works with several stakeholder teams to create marketing and management strategies.

May 7: Communities invited to participate
June 4: Community Position Descriptions due
June 21-25: Members interview with selected communities
July 5-9: Final placement decisions will be made
August 18 & 26: Supervisor Orientation
September 8-10: Member Orientation
September 13: RARE service in community begins
July 31, 2022: Last day of service

Community Benefit

Capacity matters in rural Oregon and that’s where RARE comes to the table! The benefits of partnering with the RARE AmeriCorps Program include, but are not limited to:

  *   11 months/1700 hours of service from a graduate-level RARE member
  *   Quarterly trainings for member and supervisor in Community Development, Grant Writing, Communication, Land Use, Economic Development, Facilitation, Leadership, Etc.
  *   Tools, resources, and expertise available to all members via the University of Oregon
  *   Member and community support from RARE staff
  *   Project support and topically focused expertise from the Institute for Policy Research and Engagement
  *   Member and community support from our statewide partners: Energy Trust of Oregon, The Ford Family Foundation, Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Main Street Program, and Travel Oregon

Fiscal Contribution

RARE is funded in part by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS) and in part by match-funding from our host communities.
2021-22 Community Match: $23,500
Term of Service: September 2021 - July 2022
The deadline to apply is 5pm on Friday, April 2nd.
