[OMS_MANAGERS] Parklets?

We invited all of the restaurants to a meeting to gauge interests and
followed up with in-person visits. Only two were interested originally
(this was before parklets became a buzz word), so we offered to pilot with
them. Once others saw these completed, the interest gained and we are
trying to build them for all that are interested as funds are available. I
personally built the one that's on street level. The property owner built
the decking for the other one, but we hired a contractor to upgrade it
already. We also hired a contractor to build the rest, but it still takes a
lot of creative problem solving to make it fit in each location and to work
for each unique business. I have an great staff person in our City's
Economic Development Department that has helped make all of this happen
with red-tape cutting and funding.
It's all been pretty informal, as it is still considered a pilot project
and they are in place as a response to Covid, but we hope to get the City
to adopt a policy going forward that allows them to be permanent. Each one
is an informal partnership between the business(es), the City, and HDP. The
only formal part is that the business had to provide a certificate of
insurance for liability to the City. In one case, since multiple businesses
are sharing it, we provided the COI. The business does the daily
maintenance. HDP helps with repairs and cares for the planters. The City
has provided ongoing financial support for modification and maintenance
when appropriate. Hope this helps!
