Hi all – Main Street America is hosting a webinar to debut the new Accreditation standards on Thursday from 9 am to 10:30 a.m. I am canceling our Mornings on Main call so folks who are interested can attend this session. There is also a repeat of the session on Friday, but I felt that folks may already have the time blocked off for our meeting so it would make it easier to join this session. Just so you know, only our Performing Main Street level are eligible for national accreditation. However, the standards are good targets for all our Network members to know about…Regards, Sheri

Historic King Drive

There are more than 900 streets, drives, and boulevards across the United States named after Martin Luther King Jr. Many of them are located within predominately African-American communities. 54 years after his death, the commercial districts along these streets continue to suffer from the same problems Mr. King fought to resolve.

In this article from 2021, Deshea Agee, Vice-President of Emem Group and member of the Main Street America Board of Directors, explores the work in Historic King Drive Business Improvement District #8 to bring new life to Dr. Martin Luther King Drive in Milwaukee, WI. Through these efforts, the King Drive UrbanMain district has drawn in new capital, supported local business sustainability, improved walkability, and changed community perceptions. Their efforts have significantly impacted the lives of the residents and business owners who rely on the historic MLK Drive.

The Main Street America team is thrilled to welcome Emi Morita as our new Research Analyst! Emi helps to build and manage Main Street’s survey output as well as communications regarding research efforts, and contributes to the organization’s overall research capacity.

Emi previously served as the Tony Goldman Fellow at the National Trust for Historic Preservation. In this role, in support of the Preservation Priorities Task Force, she conducted research and identified strategies that preservation organizations can use to help create and retain affordable housing.
