My advice for working with a new board is to set good expectations.

As a working board, I would ideally like to say that my board is
responsible for doing the projects, events, and programs with support from
staff. Staff's job is to represent the organization, make sure the "lights
stay on" (whatever that means to your organization), support the board,
make recommendations on programming, projects, etc. and help build the
structures that support the board and volunteers to do the work. That's in
an ideal world, but if you can get anywhere close to that, you're doing
well.
