  1. Congratulations to K'Lynn Lane for being the recipient of Travel Oregon's Partnership Award. The Oregon Partnership Award recognizes a creative partnership that enhances the visitor experience and/or promotes a region or destination. By leveraging traditional and non-traditional partnerships, organizations and businesses can maximize budget, capacity and skill set, creating an increase in efficiencies and a higher-level aligned outcome. This year's Oregon Partnership Award recipient, K'Lynn Lane, Executive Director of the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce, has provided guidance and leadership, expanding the Chamber's membership beyond Condon city limits. Within the last year, the Condon Chamber of Commerce rebranded to the Oregon Frontier Chamber of Commerce, proudly serving Gilliam, Wheeler and Sherman counties. K'Lynn's passion and enthusiasm for the people and the communities she serves is contagious and is carried forward in her work and through her networks and partnerships with Business Oregon, RDI, The Ford Family Foundation, Oregon Main Street and many more. K'Lynn has been able to leverage these partnerships to maximize the impact on her communities.

About the Summit:
2023 Oregon Heritage VIRTUAL Summit
Investing in Your Volunteers: Engage, Sustain, Value
April 27-28, 2023
A report released by the Oregon Heritage Commission in 2020 demonstrates that the work volunteers do within heritage organizations is indispensable to the preservation of Oregon's heritage. In fact, most heritage organizations are operated primarily by volunteers. The world clearly saw the impact the pandemic had on volunteer programs across the nonprofit field and building back these critical stakeholder groups is key to continuing to carry out the mission of heritage organizations across the state. Join us April 27-28 as have facilitated conversation around community engagement and how that impacts volunteer strategies, panel discussions hearing from fellow volunteer managers and volunteers, and a practical workshop to help you engage, retain, and value volunteers in a way that impacts both the volunteer and the organization in meaningful ways. The entire Summit is virtual and will occur online via Zoom.
For a schedule of events or to register, visit here<https://www.oregon.gov/oprd/OH/Pages/Heritage-Summit.aspx>.

  1. Restore Oregon announces the release of Oregon's Intangible Heritage: Supporting the Preservation of Legacy Businesses

Restore Oregon, with support from the Oregon Cultural Trust and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, announces the release of Oregon's Intangible Heritage: Supporting the Preservation of Legacy Businesses-a vital part of Restore Oregon's commitment to pursuing new and diverse historic preservation programming for Oregonians statewide. The report lays the groundwork for more inclusive and responsive preservation practices in support of our state's diverse stewards of cultural resources by outlining a program initiative for historic businesses in Oregon.

Historic small businesses continue to be lost at an alarming rate around the country and an immediate response is crucial to reduce the loss of places that serve as cornerstones of many communities. The current landscape for historic preservation emphasizes the built environment, with a particular focus on architectural heritage. While these efforts have seen success in architectural preservation, they are not geared toward historically significant businesses-especially excluding those that do not occupy historic buildings.

Our study takes a deeper look at the needs of legacy businesses, with additional focus on those that are BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color)-owned, and what a more concerted effort to preserve them might look like. Oregon's legacy business base is significant with approximately 30,000 active registrations for businesses older than 20 years, 27% of which are BIPOC-owned. Through in-depth research and outreach, Oregon's Intangible Heritage offers a clear analysis of current legacy business assistance programs, a summary of our data and outreach, and recommendations for establishing a statewide legacy business program with special emphasis on supporting those owned by the BIPOC community.

Recommendations include establishing a statewide Legacy Business Resource Center with regional offices and a two-pronged approach for services and grants tailored for business owners who rent their place of business and those who own.

M.J. Murdock Trust - https://murdocktrust.org/grant-application-process/

Strategic Grant: Expanding programs and adding staff are important markers of nonprofit success. Murdock Trust grants help fund both new programs and the expansion of existing programs and may be used to cover start-up costs and/or related staff member additions. Typically, we fund program and staff grants on a declining basis over three years (100/67/33%). Staff hires or programs initiated before Trustee action are not eligible for funding.
