The program supports cultural projects addressing one of four application categories: access; preservation; creativity; or capacity. In 2022, 88 grants ranging from $5,000 to $38,000 were awarded. FY2024 awards will support projects taking place between Sept. 1, 2023, and Aug. 31, 2024.

Advocacy Day scheduled for Wednesday, April 19
With a new legislature and leadership in Salem, the Cultural Advocacy Coalition of Oregon (CACO) encourages cultural supporters to unite their voices and remind elected officials that pandemic-related hardships throughout the sector are not going away anytime soon. Sponsored by CACO, Advocacy Day offers a chance to speak with Oregon legislators about the importance of arts and culture.

Hundreds attend Conversations with Funders events
Conversations with Funders, the Cultural Trust’s statewide series of informational events for grant seekers, is growing to become a source of funding resources for all nonprofits, not just the cultural community. Close to 600 grant seekers attended the 2023 Conversations with Funders sessions across the state Feb. 28 through March 16, including human service organizations as well as arts, heritage and humanities nonprofits.

More than 20 funders participated, including Cultural Trust partners Oregon Arts Commission, Oregon Heritage and Oregon Humanities, as well as The Oregon Community Foundation, the James F. and Marion L. Miller Foundation, Collins Foundation, Roundhouse Foundation, M.J. Murdock Charitable Trust and Cultural Trust County Cultural Coalitions, among others.

“As more funders learn of this incredible opportunity to connect with organizations serving people in all parts of the state, they welcome the chance to participate,” said Trust Manager Aili Schreiner, who coordinates the program.

DanceAbility breaks barriers through dance
A dancers’ journey of beasts, wheelchairs, tornadoes, wizards, airports, crutches and realizations: That describes DanceAbility International’s performance of “Wizard of Odds.” It’s just one example in a repertoire that empowers mixed-abilities people in finding a path to freedom of dance, movement and creative expression, supported by funding from the Cultural Trust.

Alito Alessi is the executive and artistic director of Joint Forces Dance Company in Eugene. Along with former partner Karen Nelson, he brought the idea of breaking down barriers to connect people with and without disabilities through dance and movement to Joint Forces and together with Nelson coined the term DanceAbility. They produced the first mixed-abilities workshop in 1987 using dance improvisation. As DanceAbility’s success grew and it became their main focus, they eventually morphed Joint Forces into the business of DanceAbility International.

Gilbert House inspires learning through play
Kassi Garner’s children never knew the man who reportedly “saved Christmas,” A.C. Gilbert, but his legacy and namesake Gilbert House Children's Museum in Salem has transformed their lives. “Being at the Gilbert House has really let them get little tastes of possibilities and open up conversations about the what and whys of real life,” says Garner.

The renovated Outdoor Discovery Area will introduce children to fundamental nature-based active learning. Built in front of a huge Erector set tower as a nod to the toymaker’s greatest claim to fame – it is funded in part by a $21,000 grant from the Cultural Trust. It’s all about lively recreation where interactive features like Wheels and Water, Dig and Discover, Rain and Rainbows take center stage. A.C. Gilbert believed in the value of play.
