The Beaverton Farmers Market works with Home Plate Youth Services to offer on-site pet-sitting. Each week they set up little fenced areas in the grass next to the Farmers Market, and folks can leave their dogs there (I think for a very nominal donation). It works well, and the kids get some jobs training for pet sitting.

Here is Klamath Falls we used to request no pets at our downtown Third Thursday street festivals.  Our signage also did not seem to work.  For a number of years we passed out doggie poop bags and a post card to those choosing to bring their pets.  The post card kindly outlined why we preferred pets stay home.  (dog waste, fights at stroller level etc.)  Not sure that helped either, but at least it educated pet owners on our reasoning.

The Coos Bay Downtown Association has a no pets policy at our Farmers Market and Festivals. We do have some signs that say "No Pets, Service Animals Accepted." but it doesn't seem to help. We are looking into larger signage and other options that have helped other Main Streets with this issue. We don't want to be the pet police. What do you do to deter pets at your events? Any suggestions would be welcomed.
