What is RARE?



Serving rural Oregon for over 30 years, the University of Oregon's Resource Assistance for Rural Environments (RARE) AmeriCorps Program<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https:/uoregon.us3.list-manage.com/track/click?u=59e9acbbd52c506f74b13d2c4&id=2d0156903a&e=a2bda579e6__;!!C5qS4YX3!FiHIjQCreCtf8oM-K4cm8XZ3vpivNP3XHnN2DbehCwpedUYq6zFLmt9-4YTAkP0tzsloZycweEgu2mRWoICD$> helps build the capacity of rural communities to improve their economic, social, and environmental conditions, through the assistance of trained graduate-level members who live and work in communities for 11 months. Our members assist host organizations in the development and implementation of plans for achieving a sustainable natural resource base and improving rural economic conditions while gaining community building and leadership skills.



RARE Projects



RARE AmeriCorps projects typically fall into three broad categories. Below are examples of past projects:

Community and Economic Development

  *   Coordinating the development of a downtown or parks master plan
  *   Facilitating a regional economic development planning process
  *   Engaging a community in creative placemaking and installing murals
  *   Developing and supporting outdoor recreation-based tourism in a region
  *   Promoting health and wellness initiatives by creating community resources and programming

Environmental and Sustainability Planning

  *   Coordinating an array of land conservation and enhancement projects
  *   Collaborating with planners and residents to help rebuild wildfire-affected communities
  *   Creating a rural solar outreach strategy
  *   Developing a Climate Action Plan for regional tourism organizations

Food Systems

  *   Facilitating and developing community food assessments and tribal food sovereignty assessments
  *   Enhancing local farmers’ markets and food related business activities
  *   Conducting community engagement and outreach regarding nutrition and local food sourcing
  *   Developing regional agritourism food trails

Sarah Akbari
Klamath Grown & OSU Extension
As a second year member, Sarah’s projects include creating a digital directory of local producers for Klamath Grown’s website, working on a campaign to promote local food to the community, and finding ways for Klamath Grown to collaborate with the Klamath Falls Farmers Market. She is working to decrease barriers to local food in Klamath County through equity planning and other initiatives.

Roseburg Public Library
Christian's work at the library includes continuing the great work at outreach services, assisting in developing and conducting adult programming, working with volunteers, assisting with youth services, researching and implementing best practices for a three-year technology plan, designing service projects, and developing and invoking a library use assessment survey.

Community Impact



Our members truly become a part of their communities during their term of service. The potential to make a significant community-based impact is possible for all of our members. Last year's 32 members who served during the 2022-23 service year collectively...

  *   Secured $2,724,880 in grant funding
  *   Had an additional $11,724,880 in grant funding pending
  *   Organized more than 496 volunteers (totaling more than 1,147 service hours for communities)
  *   Delivered 328 formal trainings in environmental stewardship/environmentally conscious practices
  *   Provided 514 educational trainings to small business owners, entrepreneurs, and residents
  *   Created/implemented 399 planning documents
  *   Created 735 pieces of social media content

These are just some of the impact statistics we were able to quantify. Our members are also found facilitating meetings, creating marketing materials, hosting events, painting murals, educating the community, building relationships, and so much more!

Host Org Benefits



Capacity matters in rural Oregon and that’s where RARE comes to the table! The benefits of partnering with the RARE AmeriCorps Program include, but are not limited to:

  *   11 months/1700 hours of service from a graduate-level RARE member
  *   Quarterly trainings for member and supervisor in Community Development, Grant Writing, Communication, Land Use, Economic Development, Facilitation, Leadership, Etc.
  *   Tools, resources, and expertise available to all members via the University of Oregon
  *   Member and host organization support from RARE staff
  *   Project support and topically focused expertise from the Institute for Policy Research and Engagement
  *   Member and host organization support from our statewide partners: Energy Trust of Oregon, The Ford Family Foundation, Oregon Food Bank, Oregon Main Street Program, Travel Oregon, Lake County Resources Initiative, Oregon Office of Emergency Management, Humble Beginnings, Sustainable Northwest, and the GEOS Institute

RARE is funded in part by AmeriCorps and in part by match-funding from our host organizations.
