Washington Main Street is now accepting session proposals for the Places Conference, set to take place in Walla Walla on October 16-18. Our Oregon Main Street folks are invited to submit session ideas and to attend the conference. They are interested in session ideas related to preservation of intangible heritage, fostering social connection and healthy communities, adapting historic neighborhoods, and a variety of evergreen topics. Everyone is invited to submit their ideas for hosting presentations, panels, and discussions for this exciting learning event. Grant Opportunities
The Paul Bruhn Historic Revitalization Grant program is accepting applications until March 19: The program funds preservation projects for historic sites, including architectural and engineering services and physical building preservation through subgrants to communities determined rural by the US Bureau of the Census. T-Mobile Hometown Grants: The application for the T-Mobile Hometown Grant is open now through March 31, 2024. This five-year initiative awards 25 grants per quarter to small towns and rural communities with populations less than 50,000. Learn more ><https://www.t-mobile.com/brand/hometown-grants>
Marie Lamfrom Charitable Foundation - Grant priorities in service to or address education, mentorship, arts, creativity, health, and well-being in Oregon and Washington State. We also recognize the need for emergency support pertaining to climate and other natural disasters, and consequently reserve funds to support those needs when they arise. An Accessibility-First Approach in Downtown Ruston
In 2010, the city of Ruston, Louisiana, made a commitment to center accessibility in their downtown design. They worked with local partners, like the Louisiana School for the Blind, to make important streetscape upgrades that help people of all abilities navigate the downtown. Amy Stegall, Main Street Director at Ruston Main Street, shared the community engagement and design strategies they used to complete these streetscape improvement projects. New Season of Main Street Business Insights
Main Street America has released three more episodes of the Main Street Business Insights podcast featuring stories and insights from small business owners and professionals.
* Episode 4 features Jennifer Jones, co-owner of Good Times Coal Fired Pizza and Pub in Big Stone Gap, Virginia, who spoke about her experience owning a downtown business in a new community.
* Episode 5 features Bobby Boone, founder and Chief Strategist of &Access, who spoke about how retail can be a key economic development driver and ways small businesses add social capital to communities.
