Yes – you absolutely want to track things like in-kind or other types of donations. In the case of Home Depot – did they value this as an in-kind or a materials sponsorship? That would be how you would track.

Hello Shari (and all),

Is there a way to calculate or add in kind donations to our funding plan? I’m only asking because we have had a lot this year which has off set the need to fundraise for certain projects. We had funds set aside for our mural project and Home Depot came through and paid for all materials. We have also seen interest in funding restoration projects through donation of labor and materials.

Would we add that in the plan as an amount in the form of the value of the donations we are seeking? Or would that be separate?

Hi all,

I have been conducting program evaluations and facilitating board retreats for the a good part of January and February. One of the topics that has universally come to the top is developing sustainable funding plans. Main Street organizations should have plans that include a mix of funding sources including:

  * Local government (usually through some type of service agreement)
  * Annual campaign (large and small donors)
  *   Sponsorship
  *   Fundraisers
  * Grants (typically project specific with some caveats in Oregon)
  * Other (project campaign, merchandise, etc.)

Good sources of information frequently come across Main Street America’s The Point (see attached for examples I found this morning for Friends campaigns and a business sponsorship program). In posting the Waterville example, Kathy La Plante mentioned they have their donor campaign but then have at least 2 other asks per year around Thanksgiving and Valentine’s Day reminding people of the importance of downtown and tapping in to people’s care and love for the community.

We also have a lot of resources posted on the Oregon Main Street website, www.oregonmainstreet.org<http://www.oregonmainstreet.org/> and then through the orange Network portal button. Some of the info you will find are:

Recorded webinars

  * Overview of funding sources w/Kathy La Plante.
  * Sustainable Funding series w/supporting documents.

Documents

  * 2021 OMS Donor Guide – this includes step-by-step info on putting together a campaign in addition to a lot of examples.

We also have a lot of examples in our files.

Best, Sheri
