[OMS_MANAGERS] Speakers

I don't know how much help I will be.  Our speakers are two different issues...

During our streetscape, the community wanted to have lights in our trees, and our previous Public Works Director went a step farther and found a system that plays music in time to the light patterns.  This is a complicated system that has had a few issues over the past couple of years.  The sound for the tree lights is also broadcast on a FM station that can be heard in cars.  The system can only play music that is programmed through a computer and is controlled from our Police Station (the only city building located in our downtown).

Our tree wells were designed to have an electrical box, sprinkler, drainage, and two metal rods for holes.  One hole is for a speaker pole, and the other is for flags that the Boy Scouts put up on patriotic holidays.  The picture shows the electrical box and one of the speaker poles.  These poles do not stay up year-round, they are taken down after the holidays.  We have need of other speakers throughout the year, during our market, events and parades that we can't use this system for.

We also have Wi-Fi poles along our Main Street that offer free Wi-Fi service (the same as at our city parks)   The previous IT Director had the foresight to put in a system that would allow for other items to be plugged into these poles.  Unfortunately, he told me about them the week before he changed jobs and his two predecessors haven't had this as a priority, so it's taking much longer than expected to get the information on the system from them.  Once we get those speakers installed, we'll have direct access to broadcast music and announcing during events.

I’m also curious how this will go if you decide to add them. One of our board members brought it up as a suggestion for our downtown. I fear with the weather out here though they wouldn’t last long.
