We currently have 501c6. But also started a Foundation (501c3) after 4
years of struggling. It muddies the water having both and is additional
work. Per IRS rules they must be governed differently. Two boards, two
checking accounts different banks, two different missions (but not really).

501c6 as I think someone shared is more member driven, not as many grant
opportunities, write off for businesses looks very different.

501c3 not member driven more supporters, grants opportunities to help with
projects that Main Streets should be doing, funders get a write off off
(larger donors want this). The c3 can get more software such as Quickbooks,
MailChimp, Googlework Space, Tech Soup, etc for a major discount or free.

Many Main Streets are getting both from what I am seeing, researching, and
hearing. If we had it to do over we would have applied for 501c3 first then
allowed the 501c6 to carry /lead the efforts of an economic improvement
district with the support of the 501c3 carrying grants.

Truly both are needed but what is more important is your relationship with
your city and county and property owners and making sure you have the money
in your community coming off the sidelines to say how important Main Street
is to the economic vitality of your city.
