Gotham>Earlier this week, I alerted our network to a potential threat to USDA Rural Development funding. <B>Now, another</B> <B>important federal program that has enriched Main Street communities for decades is in serious jeopardy.</B> The Transportation Enhancements program is the single largest source of federal funding for historic preservation. It has provided key funding for streetscape revitalization projects, historic bridges and depot rehabilitation, scenic landscape preservation and bicycle and pedestrian safety improvements. Depending on the state, enhancement funds have been used extensively for projects in Main Street districts.<o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: " Book?? Gotham><o:p> </o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: " Book?? Gotham>And now a damaging amendment to an appropriations bill threatens to divert 100% of TE’s funding toward bridge repair. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
<P class=MsoNormal><SPAN style="FONT-FAMILY: " Book?? Gotham>We recognize bridge repair and infrastructure improvements are important, but sacrificing the TE program is not an effective way to address a maintenance problem. As less than 2 percent of federal transportation dollars fund the Transportation Enhancements program, it would take 80 years to address the backlog of bridge repairs using the redirected funds. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>

Gotham>One of the National Trust’s national partners in this fight, the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy, has created a letter urging the Senate to reject the amendment and we’re asking for your organization to add its name to the list of supporters. <o:p></o:p></SPAN></P>
