<DIV>ASCAP and BMI are two of the major companies that collect royalties for public use of music (there is also Sesac and maybe others?). ASCAP is in essence owned by music writers/publishers while BMI is owned by the broadcast industry. For free/smaller scale events, the fee is typically a lot lower - not sure why your Farmers' Market was so high. I know for a few years, both were getting more aggressive in monitoring public performance of licensed music. You might check to see if you use a band that already has a license whether you need to have separate as well.</DIV>
