major companies that collect royalties for public use of music (there is also
Sesac and maybe others?). ASCAP is in essence owned by music
writers/publishers while BMI is owned by the broadcast industry. For
free/smaller scale events, the fee is typically a lot lower - not sure why
your Farmers' Market was so high. I know for a few years, both were getting
more aggressive in monitoring public performance of licensed music. You might
check to see if you use a band that already has a license whether you need to
