<p class="MsoNormal">When I was the ED for Hillsdale Main Street, our Design Committee obtained a grant from the city to both help install planting strips along Capitol Hwy, and (separate project) purchase a series of large bright red planters and one large
saucer planter for a random island we had at an intersection. (See photos below.) When we first installed them they looked amazing and were regularly commented on. We had a highway running through our downtown, so the size was fun and appropriate. The
biggest failure we made, however, was not making a long-term maintenance plan BEFORE approving the planters. Now, several years later, they are a complete hodgepodge. Essentially one side of the street had property owners who took it upon themselves to maintain
the ones in front of their properties, and the other side did not and they are now either empty or filled with weeds, dirty and are now an eyesore.
<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoNormal">After hearing similar stories from other downtowns, I think that finding funding and man power for initial install is the easy part. Finding the ongoing maintenance agreements is the challenge, and it has to be one before anything else
