Really good discussion around this issue this morning. When I was on the Restore Oregon board, they had a great on-boarding process. One of the things I was given was a document called a board member “friend-raising and fundraising” plan.
The plan had options on ways I, as an individual board member, could support the fundraising efforts of the organization. It included a goal of 100% board contribution participation at a level that was meaningful for the member. I thought it was such a great
idea that I adapted it for a main street organization – see attached. Best, Sheri

So I will say that in a small nonprofit I worked for previously, the board decided to require that board members make a monetary donation and they ended up losing a board member who could not make that financial contribution but was a
very visible volunteer and contributed more volunteer hours than anyone else on the board. Not only that, she was also the one board member that connected the most with visitors and pushed membership the most to those visitors. As an observer, it looked like
a huge loss for the organization, more so than the amount they were requiring her to give.
