A report released by the Oregon Heritage Commission in 2020 demonstrates that the work volunteers do within heritage organizations is indispensable to the preservation of Oregon’s heritage. In fact, most heritage organizations are operated primarily by volunteers.
The world clearly saw the impact the pandemic had on volunteer programs across the nonprofit field and building back these critical stakeholder groups is key to continuing to carry out the mission of heritage organizations across the state. Join us April 27-28

<p class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:.25in">Restore Oregon, with support from the Oregon Cultural Trust and the National Trust for Historic Preservation, announces the release of
<i>Oregon’s Intangible Heritage: Supporting the Preservation of Legacy Businesses</i><b>–</b>a vital part of Restore Oregon’s commitment to pursuing new and diverse historic preservation programming for Oregonians statewide. The report lays the groundwork for
more inclusive and responsive preservation practices in support of our state’s diverse stewards of cultural resources by outlining a program initiative for historic businesses in Oregon.

<p class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:.25in"><b>Historic small businesses continue to be lost at an alarming rate
</b>around the country and an immediate response is crucial to reduce the loss of places that serve as cornerstones of many communities. The current landscape for historic preservation emphasizes the built environment, with a particular focus on architectural
heritage. While these efforts have seen success in architectural preservation, they are not geared toward historically significant businesses—especially excluding those that do not occupy historic buildings.
<o:p></o:p></p>
<p class="MsoListParagraph" style="margin-left:.25in"><b>Our study takes a deeper look at the needs of legacy businesses</b>, with additional focus on those that are BIPOC (Black/Indigenous/People of Color)—owned, and what a more concerted effort to preserve
them might look like. Oregon’s legacy business base is significant with approximately 30,000 active registrations for businesses older than 20 years, 27% of which are BIPOC-owned. Through in-depth research and outreach,
<i>Oregon’s Intangible Heritage</i> offers a clear analysis of current legacy business assistance programs, a summary of our data and outreach, and recommendations for establishing a statewide legacy business program with special emphasis on supporting those
owned by the BIPOC community. <o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoListParagraph">Oregon Cultural Trust’s Fiscal Year 2024 Cultural Development Program (funds to be awarded summer of 2023) recognizes and supports significant projects through four program funded categories: Access; Preservation; Creativity; and
Capacity. <span lang="EN">In 2022 the Cultural Trust awarded more than $3.4 million in grants statewide.
</span>Cultural Development Program grants represent one third of the annual funding the Cultural Trust provides to Oregon’s cultural nonprofits. Other funding includes grants to the Trust’s five statewide partners – to support their mission goals and respective
funding programs – and to 45 county and tribal cultural coalitions that fund local initiatives, projects and programs.<o:p></o:p></p>

<p class="MsoListParagraph">Strategic Grant: Expanding programs and adding staff are important markers of nonprofit success. Murdock Trust grants help fund both new programs and the expansion of existing programs and may be used to cover start-up costs and/or
related staff member additions. Typically, we fund program and staff grants on a declining basis over three years (100/67/33%). Staff hires or programs initiated before Trustee action are not eligible for funding.<o:p></o:p></p>
