[or-roots] Helping make an active list!

Oregon Adoption Records are now open. My father, born in 1945 in Portland
was adopted. He ordered a copy of his original birth certificate and
received it. I have found his biological family already. I don't know when
you last tried, but it may be worth checking into again.

Don't hold out much hope to get adoption records in Oregon. I was adopted
in Portland in 1945 by my mother's brother when I was orphaned at age 12.
By order of the court in Multnomah County, my birth records in Yreka
California were changed and the originals sealed. There is some Oregon law
about preserving the anonymity of the birth parents to avoid the "shame" of
giving up a baby for adoption. This law has been perverted to prevent the
disclosure of information where no shame could possibly be involved; like my
case where both my birth mother and birth father were dead when I was
adopted.

Ruby Willeta Clarke, was raised by her grandparents Frederic A. and Louisa
A. Clarke in Gresham, OR. Ruby was born 12-12-1884 in Mt. Tabor, OR to Ida
Louise Clarke and William J. Sewell (or Sewall). Ida left/divorced William
(not sure which) and left Ruby with her adopted parents, the Clarkes.
Herein lies the problem: I don't know where Ida Louise and her sister
Annie/Anna M. came from. I don't know if they are biological sisters.. I
do know that both were disinherited from their adopted parents' wills; Ida
later married a Henri ApJohn (born in Canada in 1865, medical student in
Portland) and lived in Yuma Arizona briefly; Annie married a James Mernah,
whereabouts unknown.

The Clarkes were settled in Gresham by 1865; Frederic was quite successful,
owned lots of land, was associated with IOOF, etc. etc. But he's not my
direct line. They lost their only natural child Cora Bell to brain fever in
1871 and probably adopted the two girls after that, but before 1878 (the
date of Frederic's will). I checked with Oregon Archives and they do not
have adoption records that far back.

may have been English and lived in the Gladstone/Milwaukie area; Ida was
born around 1867, maybe in Oregon. Any suggestions? If there is anyone in
the Multnomah county area that feels like poking into this one, I can offer
my look-up services at the National Archives here in Seattle.
