My great grandparents (according to family lore) traveled from Illinois to
Missouri (Carrolton) down the river to New Orleans where they took a boat
(ship?) to the West. Apparently the whole family or most of them came along. I
haven't figured out how they got to Linn County where some of them settled, or
Bethel, where some of them "landed", and haven't found any record of it, but
since the story came from a couple of family sources that were only discovered
in the last few years I am inclined to believe. Others of our family came by
wagon train and settled in Goldendale. Still others came from Kansas and
settled in Sherman County. They weren't so far from Joplin so maybe they came by
train in the 1880's. I would love to find where to look for all of these
travels.
(and as you get older, any expertise you had with a speller goes up in
smoke)...
