[or-roots] Winter of 49-50

I was growing up on a farm south of Hood River and can't remember how many
feet of snow we had, but I do remember how it drifted up against the roof
of our barn. After the silver thaw brought a really hard crust to the snow
we used the crust to climb up on the barn roof, then "sledded" down on our
behinds, landing on the crust where we had enough impetus to keep going a
ways farther. It's hard to believe now how deep that snow was and how hard
and thick the crust was. Later, after the thaw had started, my sister lost
one of her boots when she stepped through the crust while trying to walk
across a lawn, and we didn't find the boot until most of the snow had melted.
